You step on the scale and see a number. But is that number healthy? Underweight? Dangerous? Without context, your weight is just a data point. BMI gives it meaning — but only if you're reading the right chart.
This guide provides the complete BMI reference: charts by height, Indian-specific categories, age adjustments, and the student health advice nobody gives you in college.
BMI Chart: Healthy Weight by Height
For Indian Adults (BMI 18.5-22.9 is Normal)
| Height (cm) | Underweight (<18.5) | Normal (18.5-22.9) | Overweight (23-27.9) | Obese (≥28) | |------------|--------------------|--------------------|--------------------|-------------| | 150 | < 41.6 | 41.6 - 51.5 | 51.8 - 62.8 | ≥ 63.0 | | 155 | < 44.4 | 44.4 - 55.0 | 55.2 - 67.0 | ≥ 67.3 | | 160 | < 47.4 | 47.4 - 58.6 | 58.9 - 71.4 | ≥ 71.7 | | 165 | < 50.4 | 50.4 - 62.4 | 62.6 - 75.9 | ≥ 76.2 | | 170 | < 53.5 | 53.5 - 66.2 | 66.5 - 80.6 | ≥ 80.9 | | 175 | < 56.7 | 56.7 - 70.2 | 70.4 - 85.4 | ≥ 85.8 | | 180 | < 59.9 | 59.9 - 74.2 | 74.5 - 90.4 | ≥ 90.7 | | 185 | < 63.3 | 63.3 - 78.4 | 78.7 - 95.4 | ≥ 95.8 |
How to use this chart: Find your height in the left column. Your weight should fall in the "Normal" range. If it's in "Overweight" or "Obese," you're above the Indian healthy range.
Example: 170 cm, 72 kg → falls in "Overweight" (66.5-80.6). By WHO standards, 72 kg at 170 cm = BMI 24.9 (still "normal"). By Indian standards, you're overweight.
Quick BMI Lookup Table
Find your weight (kg) on the left and height (cm) on top:
| | 155 | 160 | 165 | 170 | 175 | 180 | |---|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | 50 | 20.8 | 19.5 | 18.4 | 17.3 | 16.3 | 15.4 | | 55 | 22.9 | 21.5 | 20.2 | 19.0 | 17.9 | 17.0 | | 60 | 24.9 | 23.4 | 22.0 | 20.8 | 19.6 | 18.5 | | 65 | 27.0 | 25.4 | 23.9 | 22.5 | 21.2 | 20.1 | | 70 | 29.1 | 27.3 | 25.7 | 24.2 | 22.9 | 21.6 | | 75 | 31.2 | 29.3 | 27.5 | 26.0 | 24.5 | 23.1 | | 80 | 33.3 | 31.3 | 29.4 | 27.7 | 26.1 | 24.7 |
Color coding (Indian standard): Green = 18.5-22.9 (normal), Yellow = 23-27.9 (overweight), Red = ≥28 (obese).
BMI Categories: Indian vs International
| Category | WHO (International) | ICMR (India) | |----------|--------------------:|-------------:| | Underweight | < 18.5 | < 18.5 | | Normal | 18.5 – 24.9 | 18.5 – 22.9 | | Overweight | 25.0 – 29.9 | 23.0 – 27.9 | | Obese Class I | 30.0 – 34.9 | 28.0 – 32.9 | | Obese Class II | 35.0 – 39.9 | 33.0 – 37.9 | | Obese Class III | ≥ 40.0 | ≥ 38.0 |
The gap exists because South Asian bodies develop metabolic disease at lower BMIs. The landmark 2004 WHO expert consultation on Asian BMI cutoffs found that diabetes prevalence at BMI 25 in Indians was equivalent to BMI 30 in Europeans.
The Trench Truth: Indian medical colleges still teach WHO cutoffs in some curricula. If your college health check says your BMI 24 is "normal," they're using the wrong chart. By Indian standards, you're already overweight and at elevated metabolic risk. Don't wait for BMI 25 to start making changes.
BMI by Age: Why the Same Number Means Different Things
Children (Age 2-20): Use Percentiles
Children aren't small adults — their body composition is constantly changing. BMI must be interpreted against age- and sex-specific growth charts.
| Age | Boys 50th %ile BMI | Girls 50th %ile BMI | |-----|-------------------|-------------------| | 6 | 15.3 | 15.2 | | 8 | 16.0 | 15.9 | | 10 | 16.8 | 16.7 | | 12 | 17.8 | 17.9 | | 14 | 19.0 | 19.3 | | 16 | 20.2 | 20.3 | | 18 | 21.2 | 21.0 |
A BMI of 18 is normal for a 14-year-old but underweight for a 25-year-old.
Adults 20-65: Use Fixed Categories
The standard BMI categories apply. No age adjustment needed.
Adults 65+: The "Obesity Paradox"
Multiple studies show that BMI 23-28 is optimal for adults over 65. Being slightly overweight is associated with:
- Better recovery from illness and surgery
- Protection against osteoporotic fractures
- Higher survival rates during hospitalization
A BMI under 20 in elderly patients is a stronger mortality risk factor than a BMI of 28.
Student Health: The BMI Reality Check
College Weight Gain: The "Freshman 15"
Research shows the average college student gains 1.5-3 kg in their first year, not the mythical 15 pounds. But the pattern is real:
| Factor | Weight Impact | |--------|--------------| | All-you-can-eat dining halls | +2-4 kg/year | | Reduced physical activity | +1-3 kg/year | | Alcohol (if applicable) | +1-2 kg/year | | Irregular sleep | +0.5-1 kg/year | | Stress eating | +1-2 kg/year |
Healthy Weight Management for Students
- Know your number: Calculate your BMI using the BMI Calculator
- Track waist circumference: More important than BMI for Indians (>90 cm men, >80 cm women = high risk)
- Eat on schedule: Irregular meals cause insulin spikes that drive fat storage
- Walk 30 minutes/day: The single most effective weight maintenance habit for students
- Sleep 7-8 hours: Sleep deprivation increases ghrelin (hunger hormone) by 28%
When to See a Doctor
- BMI below 17.5 → possible eating disorder, seek help immediately
- BMI above 30 (WHO) or 28 (Indian) → consult a physician about metabolic risk
- Waist > 90 cm (men) or > 80 cm (women) → high visceral fat regardless of BMI
- Sudden weight change (>5% in 3 months without trying) → medical evaluation needed
