Your BMI says 24. You're "normal" by WHO standards. But if you're South Asian, you might already be at risk.

The Trench Truth: A BMI of 24 is "normal" by WHO but "overweight" by Indian standards. South Asians develop diabetes and heart disease at lower BMIs because we carry more visceral fat (belly fat) and less muscle mass than Caucasian populations at the same BMI. If you're using WHO ranges for an Indian body, you're getting a false sense of security.

Why BMI 23 Is the Indian Danger Zone

Three reasons the Indian threshold is lower:

1. Visceral Fat: The Silent Killer

South Asians store more fat around organs (visceral fat) and less under the skin (subcutaneous fat). Visceral fat is metabolically active โ€” it drives insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart disease.

The BMI Problem: When It Gets It Wrong

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. It fails in several important cases:
