CUET 2025: Complete Guide to India's Common University Entrance Test

CUET 2025: Complete Guide to India's Common University Entrance Test

CUET replaced 15+ different entrance exams with one. Good idea. But now 15 lakh students compete for the same seats through a single test, and the cut-offs are brutal. Here's everything you need โ€” exam pattern, subject choices, cut-offs, and the percentage you actually need.

What Is CUET?

Common University Entrance Test (CUET) โ€” a single national exam for admission to 250+ central, state, and private universities.

| Feature | Details | |---------|---------| | Conducted by | NTA (National Testing Agency) | | Frequency | Once/year (typically May) | | Mode | Computer-based (CBT) | | Duration | Variable (45 min per section) | | Languages | 13 (English, Hindi + 11 regional) | | Applicants (2024) | ~15 lakh | | Universities (2025) | 250+ |

The Trench Truth: Before CUET, Delhi University admitted students based on Class 12 board marks. A student scoring 99.5% in CBSE got into SRCC. Now, that same student must also crack CUET with a high percentile. The board marks still matter (some universities use them as a tiebreaker), but CUET is the gatekeeper. The old system rewarded consistent academic performance over 2 years. The new system rewards exam-day performance in 45 minutes. That's not necessarily better โ€” it's just different.

Cut-Off Marks: What Percentile Do You Need?

๐Ÿ“Š 2024 Cut-Offs (Percentile) for Top Universities

| University | Course | General Category | OBC | SC | ST | |-----------|--------|-----------------|-----|----|----| | DU - SRCC | B.Com Hons | 99.5+ | 97+ | 93+ | 90+ | | DU - LSR | BA Economics | 99+ | 96+ | 92+ | 88+ | | DU - Hindu | B.Sc Math Hons | 98+ | 95+ | 90+ | 87+ | | JNU | BA International Relations | 95+ | 90+ | 85+ | 80+ | | BHU | B.Com Hons | 90+ | 85+ | 78+ | 72+ | | JMI | BA Mass Comm | 88+ | 82+ | 75+ | 70+ | | Central Univ. Hyderabad | MA Economics | 85+ | 80+ | 73+ | 68+ |

The Trench Truth: For Delhi University's top colleges (SRCC, LSR, Hindu, Hansraj), you need 99+ percentile in the general category. That means you scored higher than 99% of the ~15 lakh test-takers. Only the top 15,000 students make it. With negative marking (โˆ’1 per wrong answer), blind guessing is suicide. Leaving a question blank (0 marks) is always better than a wrong answer (โˆ’1). The difference between 98.5 and 99.5 percentile could be just 5-8 questions.

Preparation Strategy: 90-Day Plan

๐Ÿ“Š Phase Breakdown

| Phase | Duration | Focus | Daily Hours | |-------|---------|-------|------------| | Phase 1: Foundation | Days 1-30 | NCERT basics + concept clarity | 6-8 hrs | | Phase 2: Practice | Days 31-60 | Topic-wise MCQs + speed drills | 8-10 hrs | | Phase 3: Mock Tests | Days 61-90 | Full mocks + analysis + revision | 8-10 hrs |

๐Ÿ“Š Mock Test Strategy

| Mock Frequency | When | What to Analyze | |---------------|------|----------------| | 1/week | Phase 2 | Accuracy rate, time per section | | 2/week | Phase 3 (early) | Weak topics, negative marking ratio | | 3/week | Phase 3 (last 2 weeks) | Exam simulation, stamina, percentile estimate |

๐Ÿ“Š Target Accuracy by Section

| Section | Target Accuracy | Attempt Rate | Expected Score | |---------|----------------|-------------|---------------| | Language | 85%+ | 40/40 | 170/200 | | Domain (each) | 80%+ | 40/40 | 160/200 | | General Test | 75%+ | 55/60 | 200/300 |

Key Takeaways

  • CUET is the single gateway to 250+ universities โ€” replacing board-based admission at DU and others
  • Pick domain subjects based on your target course, not your Class 12 subjects
  • Negative marking (โˆ’1 per wrong answer) โ€” never guess blindly; leave blank = 0, wrong = โˆ’1
  • DU top colleges need 99+ percentile โ€” only top 15,000 out of 15 lakh applicants
  • 90-day plan: 30 days concepts โ†’ 30 days practice โ†’ 30 days mocks
