Tipping Guide - How Much to Tip by Country & Service Type

Tipping rules change the moment you cross a border. In New York, not tipping 20% is an insult. In Tokyo, leaving a tip is one. The same ₹200 that's generous in Delhi is offensive in London.

This guide covers tipping customs for every major destination — so you never overpay, underpay, or accidentally offend.

The Trench Truth: In Japan, leaving a tip can be interpreted as an insult — it implies the server isn't being paid fairly by their employer, or that you're trying to buy special treatment. The correct response to excellent service in Japan is a sincere "arigatou gozaimasu" (thank you very much). This is the opposite of the US, where tipping is essentially a hidden surcharge that funds the server's actual wages.

When to Tip More (or Less)

Tip More When

  • Large party (6+): Server handles more complexity
  • Special dietary requests: Extra effort for custom orders
  • Bad weather delivery: Driver braved conditions for you
  • Exceptional service: Went above and beyond
  • Late-night service: Working undesirable hours

Tip Less (or Not At All) When

  • Service charge already included: Don't double-tip
  • Buffet/self-service: Minimal server involvement
  • Rude or hostile server: Minimum tip (US) or nothing (India)
  • Wrong order, cold food, long wait: Speak to manager instead of $0 tip

The Math: Quick Tip Calculator

For quick estimates at the table:

To find 15%: Move decimal one place left (10%), then add half of that

To find 18%: Find 20% (double the 10%), then subtract 2%

To find 20%: Move decimal one place left, then double it
