Marks

Marks are the numerical score awarded for a student's performance in a test, exam or assessment component.

"Marks" is the common Indian-English / Pakistani-English term for the numerical score awarded in an exam or test. American English uses "score" or "points"; British English uses "marks" the same way South Asian English does.

Marks are usually expressed as obtained/total — e.g. "85/100" means 85 out of a maximum of 100. The convention in CBSE / ICSE / FSc boards is that the maximum total varies by subject (80 marks for theory + 20 for practicals is common at Class 10 level), but the overall aggregate is reported out of 500 across five subjects.

Marks become a percentage when divided by the total and multiplied by 100. They become a grade when mapped through a grade-band table. They become a CGPA when grades are converted to grade points and averaged.

Worked example

A student's mark in Maths is 78/80 in theory and 18/20 in practicals → total Maths mark = 96/100.
