km/h to mph: Speed Limits Around the World Explained

km/h to mph: Speed Limits Around the World Explained

You're driving in Canada and the sign says 100 km/h. Your speedometer shows mph. Is that fast or slow? The difference between 100 km/h and 100 mph is the difference between a highway and a racetrack — and a very large speeding ticket.

The Formula: km/h to mph

1 km/h = 0.621371 mph

mph = km/h × 0.621371

| km/h | Calculation | mph | Context | |------|------------|-----|---------| | 20 km/h | 20 × 0.621371 | 12.4 mph | School zone | | 50 km/h | 50 × 0.621371 | 31.1 mph | City street | | 80 km/h | 80 × 0.621371 | 49.7 mph | Rural road | | 100 km/h | 100 × 0.621371 | 62.1 mph | Highway | | 120 km/h | 120 × 0.621371 | 74.6 mph | Expressway | | 140 km/h | 140 × 0.621371 | 87.0 mph | Autobahn (recommended) | | 200 km/h | 200 × 0.621371 | 124.3 mph | Supercar territory |

The Trench Truth: 100 km/h ≠ 100 mph. Not even close. 100 km/h is 62 mph — a normal highway speed. 100 mph is 161 km/h — fast enough to lose your license in every country except Germany's unlimited Autobahn sections. Confusing the two is the #1 mistake American tourists make when driving in Europe or India.

The Reverse: mph to km/h

1 mph = 1.60934 km/h

km/h = mph × 1.60934

| mph | Calculation | km/h | Context | |-----|------------|------|---------| | 25 mph | 25 × 1.60934 | 40.2 km/h | Residential area | | 35 mph | 35 × 1.60934 | 56.3 km/h | Urban road | | 55 mph | 55 × 1.60934 | 88.5 km/h | US highway | | 65 mph | 65 × 1.60934 | 104.6 km/h | US freeway | | 70 mph | 70 × 1.60934 | 112.7 km/h | US interstate | | 80 mph | 80 × 1.60934 | 128.7 km/h | Texas toll road |

Mental Math Shortcuts

The "60% Rule" (km/h → mph)

mph ≈ km/h × 0.6 (or just take 60% of km/h)

| km/h | 60% | Exact mph | Error | |------|-----|----------|-------| | 50 | 30 | 31.1 | −1.1 | | 100 | 60 | 62.1 | −2.1 | | 120 | 72 | 74.6 | −2.6 | | 150 | 90 | 93.2 | −3.2 |

Close enough for driving. Off by about 3% — well within speedometer tolerance.

The "Add 60%" Method (mph → km/h)

km/h ≈ mph + 60% of mph (or mph × 1.6)

| mph | +60% | Exact km/h | Error | |-----|------|-----------|-------| | 50 | 80 | 80.5 | −0.5 | | 60 | 96 | 96.6 | −0.6 | | 70 | 112 | 112.7 | −0.7 | | 80 | 128 | 128.7 | −0.7 |

Speed Limits by Country

📊 Highway Speed Limits

| Country | Highway Limit | Unit | In Other Unit | |---------|-------------|------|--------------| | India | 120 km/h | km/h | 74.6 mph | | USA | 70-80 mph | mph | 113-129 km/h | | Germany | Unlimited (130 recommended) | km/h | 81 mph recommended | | UK | 70 mph | mph | 112.7 km/h | | France | 130 km/h | km/h | 80.8 mph | | Australia | 100-110 km/h | km/h | 62-68 mph | | Japan | 100 km/h | km/h | 62.1 mph | | China | 120 km/h | km/h | 74.6 mph | | Pakistan | 120 km/h | km/h | 74.6 mph | | UAE | 140 km/h | km/h | 87 mph |

📊 India Speed Limits by Road Type (2024)

| Road Type | Speed Limit | Vehicle Type | Fine for Overspeeding | |----------|-----------|-------------|---------------------| | School zone | 25 km/h | All | ₹500-1,000 | | City road | 30-50 km/h | All | ₹500-1,000 | | Urban arterial | 50-60 km/h | All | ₹1,000 | | State highway | 80 km/h | Car | ₹1,000-2,000 | | National highway | 100 km/h | Car | ₹2,000 | | Expressway | 120 km/h | Car | ₹2,000 | | Any road | 80 km/h | Heavy vehicle | ₹2,000 | | Any road | 50 km/h | Two-wheeler (city) | ₹1,000 | | Expressway | 80 km/h | Two-wheeler | ₹2,000 |

The Trench Truth: India's new expressways (Mumbai-Delhi, Bengaluru-Chennai) are designed for 140 km/h but the legal limit is 120 km/h. The 20 km/h gap exists because Indian enforcement cameras trigger at 120 + 5% tolerance = 126 km/h. Drive at 125 and you're fine. Drive at 127 and you get a ₹2,000 e-challan within 48 hours. The cameras don't negotiate.
