Mean vs Median - When to Use Each & Why It Matters

Mean vs Median - When to Use Each & Why It Matters

The mean and median are both "averages," but they tell completely different stories when outliers are present. Choosing the wrong one doesn't just give a different number — it gives a misleading one.

The Core Difference

Mean = sum of all values ÷ count (sensitive to every value, including outliers)

Median = middle value when sorted (ignores the magnitude of outliers)

The Outlier Problem

Example: Startup Salaries

5 employees earn: ₹3L, ₹4L, ₹5L, ₹6L, ₹7L

  • Mean = 25/5 = ₹5L
  • Median = ₹5L

Now the founder joins at ₹50L: ₹3L, ₹4L, ₹5L, ₹6L, ₹7L, ₹50L

  • Mean = 75/6 = ₹12.5L
  • Median = (5+6)/2 = ₹5.5L

The mean more than doubled because of one outlier. The median barely moved. Which represents "typical pay" — ₹5.5L or ₹12.5L?

When to Use Mean

Use mean when:

  • Data is roughly symmetric (no extreme skew)
  • No extreme outliers
  • Every data point should carry equal weight
  • You need the measure for further calculations (variance, z-scores)

Good examples: Temperature readings, reaction times, exam scores in a well-designed test, heights

When to Use Median

Use median when:

  • Data is skewed (asymmetric)
  • Outliers exist
  • You want the "typical" value
  • Data has natural limits (can't go below 0, etc.)

Good examples: Income/salary, home prices, time to complete a task (some people take very long), net worth

Real-World Examples

Indian Income Data

According to recent surveys:

  • Mean household income: ~₹8L/year
  • Median household income: ~₹3L/year

The mean is 2.7× the median because high earners (₹50L+) pull the mean up. The median reflects what most households actually earn.

Real Estate Prices

In a Mumbai neighborhood:

  • 10 apartments: ₹80L, ₹85L, ₹90L, ₹95L, ₹1Cr, ₹1.1Cr, ₹1.2Cr, ₹1.5Cr, ₹2Cr, ₹10Cr
  • Mean = ₹1.93Cr
  • Median = ₹1.05Cr

The ₹10Cr penthouse makes the mean almost double the median. The median is the "typical" apartment price.

Exam Scores

Class of 30 students takes a test (out of 100):

  • 28 students: 65-85 range
  • 2 students: scored 15 and 20 (absent most of the semester)

Mean ≈ 72, Median ≈ 76

The two low scores pull the mean down. The median better represents class performance.

How to Tell If Data Is Skewed

| Indicator | Right-Skewed | Left-Skewed | Symmetric | |-----------|-------------|------------|-----------| | Mean vs Median | Mean > Median | Mean < Median | Mean ≈ Median | | Tail direction | Long right tail | Long left tail | No long tail | | Example | Income, home prices | Easy exam (most score high) | Heights, blood pressure |

The Trench Truth: When a news headline says "average salary increased 15%," check if they're reporting mean or median. If mean, the increase might be concentrated among top earners while the median stayed flat. The "rising average" could mask stagnant wages for most people. This is how statistics can tell truth and lie simultaneously.
