You're staring at your CBSE Class 12 marksheet and your brain is doing that thing — calculating percentages, then immediately googling "is 88% good in 12th". We have all been there. The result card hands you a number; it does not hand you context. Without context, an 88% feels either like a coronation or a catastrophe depending on which cousin texted last. Here is the reality. We pulled the official CBSE 2024 numbers and built the chart that should have come with your result card.
The Headline Numbers (And Why 87.98% Means Less Than You Think)
CBSE Class 12 pass percentage in 2024 came in at 87.98% — out of 16.21 lakh students who appeared, 14.26 lakh cleared. Sounds high, right? It is. But that is also exactly why a high percentage no longer guarantees what it used to.

The Pass Percentage Trend (2022 → 2024)
Pandemic-era CBSE was generous. The 2022 cohort cleared at 92.71% under the two-term split exam. Then 2023 dropped to 87.33% when the full pre-pandemic format returned. 2024's 87.98% is not a recovery — it is the new normal. Plan for that baseline, not the inflated 2022 figure.
CBSE Class 12 — 3-Year Pass Percentage
| Year | Overall Pass % | Girls | Boys | Top Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 92.71% | 94.54% | 91.25% | Trivandrum · 99.78% |
| 2023 | 87.33% | 90.68% | 84.67% | Trivandrum · 99.91% |
| 2024 | 87.98% | 91.52% | 85.12% | Trivandrum · 99.91% |
The Trench Truth: What "Good Marks" Actually Means in 2024
Forget the relatives. Forget the WhatsApp forwards. Here are the actual score bands from 2024.
Out of the 16.21 lakh CBSE Class 12 students:
- 24,068 students scored 95% or above. That is the top 1.48%.
- 1,13,151 students scored 90% or above. That is the top 6.98%.
- 4,62,458 students scored 80% or above. That is the top 28.5%.
So when your aunt says "90 percent kuch nahi hai", she is statistically wrong by an order of magnitude. A 90% places you in the top 7%. Period.
But the cut-off for top-tier college admissions has crept upward. Delhi University central colleges' first cut-offs touched 99% for popular Economics/Commerce/CS streams in 2024. JEE Main qualifying still routes through Class 12 marks. Use our Marks Needed Calculator to figure out exactly what you need on each subject if you are still mid-board-exam.
Subject by Subject: Where Did You Lose Marks?
This is where most "10 mins of post-result anxiety" can be solved with one number — the all-India average. If you scored above the average, you did better than half the country. The math is actually pretty simple. Here are the verified 2024 subject averages.
Class 12 Subject Averages — 2024
| Subject | Avg Marks (out of 100) | Pass % |
|---|---|---|
| English Core | 71.2 | 96.4% |
| Mathematics | 62.8 | 80.5% |
| Physics | 64.3 | 85.6% |
| Chemistry | 67.5 | 89.1% |
| Biology | 66.4 | 89.6% |
| Computer Science | 73.9 | 92.2% |
| Accountancy | 64.1 | 85.8% |
| Business Studies | 70.6 | 91.3% |
| Economics | 66.9 | 88.7% |
The takeaway: a 62.8 in Maths is exactly average. A 75 in Maths puts you above ~70% of the country. A 90 in Maths is genuinely elite — only the top 5–6% of CBSE Maths candidates clear that bar. The Gender Gap Is Wider Than Ever
Girls scored 91.52% in 2024. Boys scored 85.12%. That 6.4 percentage point gap is the largest in CBSE Class 12 history. There is no single neat reason — multiple research papers have pointed to differences in classroom engagement and exam-pattern adaptation — but the trend has been steady for a decade and is now accelerating.
The Region Story: Why Trivandrum Keeps Winning
Trivandrum region cleared at 99.91% in Class 12 — that is sixth consecutive year at the top. Vijayawada (99.04%) and Chennai (98.95%) followed. Delhi region, despite being the largest by enrolment, sits comfortably mid-table.
Think of it this way: CBSE schools in Kerala-Tamil Nadu-Andhra cluster benefit from a tight academic ecosystem, longer school hours, and entrenched coaching culture. None of which the CBSE board itself controls. The numbers reward consistency, not flair.
