Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) is the affiliating technical university for Odisha, covering 100+ engineering and management colleges. Like VTU and Anna University, BPUT uses a straightforward CGPA-to-percentage conversion.
This guide covers BPUT's official formula, the grading scale, worked examples, and how it compares to other Indian universities.
BPUT's Official Formula
BPUT Conversion Formula
Percentage = CGPA × 10
BPUT uses the same ×10 multiplier as VTU, Anna University, and most state technical universities. A CGPA of 8.0 equals 80%.
Worked Examples
| CGPA | Calculation | Percentage | |:---:|:---|:---:| | 9.5 | 9.5 × 10 | 95% | | 9.0 | 9.0 × 10 | 90% | | 8.5 | 8.5 × 10 | 85% | | 8.0 | 8.0 × 10 | 80% | | 7.5 | 7.5 × 10 | 75% | | 7.0 | 7.0 × 10 | 70% | | 6.5 | 6.5 × 10 | 65% | | 6.0 | 6.0 × 10 | 60% |
BPUT Grading Scale
BPUT follows the standard 10-point grading system:
| Grade | Grade Points | Marks Range | |:---:|:---:|:---:| | O (Outstanding) | 10 | 90–100% | | E (Excellent) | 9 | 80–89% | | A (Very Good) | 8 | 70–79% | | B (Good) | 7 | 60–69% | | C (Average) | 6 | 50–59% | | D (Pass) | 5 | 40–49% | | F (Fail) | 0 | Below 40% |
BPUT Degree Classifications
| CGPA Range | Percentage | Classification | |:---:|:---:|:---| | 8.0+ | 80%+ | First Class with Distinction | | 7.0–7.99 | 70–79.9% | First Class | | 6.0–6.99 | 60–69.9% | Second Class | | 5.0–5.99 | 50–59.9% | Pass | | Below 5.0 | Below 50% | Fail |
CGPA Calculation at BPUT
BPUT uses credit-weighted averaging:
SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ Total Credits
Example: 4-Semester CGPA
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits | |:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| | Sem 1 | 7.8 | 22 | 171.6 | | Sem 2 | 8.2 | 24 | 196.8 | | Sem 3 | 8.5 | 22 | 187.0 | | Sem 4 | 7.9 | 24 | 189.6 |
- Total: 171.6 + 196.8 + 187.0 + 189.6 = 745.0
- Credits: 22 + 24 + 22 + 24 = 92
- CGPA: 745.0 ÷ 92 = 8.10
- Percentage: 8.10 × 10 = 81.0% → First Class with Distinction
BPUT vs Other University Formulas
| University | Formula | CGPA 8.0 → % | |:---|:---|:---:| | BPUT | CGPA × 10 | 80% | | VTU | CGPA × 10 | 80% | | Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 80% | | CBSE | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% | | Mumbai University | (CGPA × 7.1) + 11 | 67.8% | | SPPU (Pune) | CGPA × 8.8 | 70.4% |
BPUT, VTU, and Anna University all use the same ×10 multiplier, making conversions consistent across these three major state technical universities.
Common Mistakes
❌ Using CBSE's 9.5 multiplier
CBSE's ×9.5 gives 76% for CGPA 8.0 instead of the correct 80%. Always use ×10 for BPUT.
❌ Confusing BPUT's E grade with a failing grade
BPUT uses 'E' for Excellent (9 points), not for fail. The failing grade is 'F'. This is different from some other universities where E can mean marginal pass.
