Australia doesn't have a single national grading system — each university sets its own scale. But most Australian universities follow a similar structure based on grade descriptors (HD, D, Cr, P, N) rather than percentages or GPA points.
This guide covers the most common Australian grading scale, how it converts to GPA and percentages, and how it compares to US, UK, and European systems.
The Standard Australian Grade Scale
Most Australian universities use this structure:

- Pass mark is 50%, not 60% (US) or 40% (UK)
- Grades are descriptors, not letters (A, B, C)
- Some universities add Conceded Pass (PC or SP) for 45–49%

Most Australian universities use a 7-point GPA scale:

Notice: Melbourne and ANU set HD at 80%+, while UNSW and UQ require 85%+. This means a 82% is HD at Melbourne but only D at UNSW.

The ATAR System (High School)
For high school students, Australia uses the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) — a percentile rank, not a percentage score:
