If you're a university student in India, your transcript shows SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) for each semester and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) as the overall score. But how exactly does SGPA become CGPA? And why do different universities use different formulas?
This guide breaks down the conversion, shows worked examples for popular Indian universities, and clears up common mistakes that cost students accuracy.
What Is SGPA?
SGPA is your grade point average for a single semester. It's calculated by weighting each course's grade points by its credit value.
SGPA Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
Example: Semester 1
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Points | Weighted Points | |:---|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| | Mathematics | 4 | A | 9 | 36 | | Physics | 3 | B+ | 8 | 24 | | Chemistry | 3 | B | 7 | 21 | | English | 2 | A+ | 10 | 20 |
- Total weighted points: 36 + 24 + 21 + 20 = 101
- Total credits: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 = 12
- SGPA: 101 ÷ 12 = 8.42
What Is CGPA?
CGPA is the cumulative average across all completed semesters. It's not simply the average of your SGPAs — it depends on whether your university uses credit-weighted or simple averaging.
CGPA Formula (Credit-Weighted)
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Σ Semester Credits
How to Convert SGPA to CGPA
Method 1: Credit-Weighted (Most Common)
This is the standard method used by VTU, JNTUH, Anna University, and most Indian universities.
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × Credits | |:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| | Sem 1 | 8.42 | 12 | 101.04 | | Sem 2 | 7.88 | 14 | 110.32 | | Sem 3 | 8.67 | 13 | 112.71 | | Sem 4 | 9.10 | 12 | 109.20 |
Calculation:
- Total (SGPA × Credits): 101.04 + 110.32 + 112.71 + 109.20 = 433.27
- Total credits: 12 + 14 + 13 + 12 = 51
- CGPA: 433.27 ÷ 51 = 8.50
Method 2: Simple Average (Some Universities)
A few universities simply average all SGPAs without weighting by credits:
CGPA = (SGPA₁ + SGPA₂ + … + SGPAₙ) ÷ n
Using the same data: (8.42 + 7.88 + 8.67 + 9.10) ÷ 4 = 8.52
The difference is small here, but it grows when semesters have unequal credit loads.
Always check your university's formula. Credit-weighted is the standard, but some institutions use simple averaging.
University-Specific CGPA to Percentage Formulas
Once you have your CGPA, converting it to a percentage requires your university's specific multiplier:
| University | Formula | Example (CGPA 8.5) | |:---|:---|:---:| | VTU (Visvesvaraya) | CGPA × 10 | 85% | | JNTUH | CGPA × 10 | 85% | | Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 85% | | CBSE | CGPA × 9.5 | 80.75% | | Mumbai University | CGPA × 7.1 + 11 | 71.35% | | APJ Abdul Kalam (KTU) | CGPA × 10 | 85% | | BPUT (Odisha) | CGPA × 10 | 85% | | MAKAUT (West Bengal) | CGPA × 10 | 85% | | SPPU (Pune) | CGPA × 8.8 (approx.) | 74.8% |

SGPA to CGPA: Common Mistakes
❌ Simple Average When Credits Differ
Averaging SGPAs without weighting ignores that some semesters carry more credits. This inflates or deflates your CGPA.
❌ Wrong Percentage Multiplier
Using CBSE's 9.5 multiplier for VTU or Anna University results (which use ×10) gives an incorrect percentage.
❌ Including Failed Subjects
Some universities include F-grade courses in credit totals but assign 0 grade points, pulling CGPA down. Check if your university excludes them after clearing backlogs.
❌ Confusing SGPA with GPA
SGPA is on a 10-point scale (India). US GPA is on a 4.0 scale. They're not interchangeable — use our GPA to percentage converter for US conversions.
SGPA to CGPA Quick Reference Table
If all semesters have equal credits, you can estimate your CGPA from SGPAs:
| SGPA Range | Approx. CGPA | Approx. % (×10) | Classification | |:---:|:---:|:---:|:---| | 9.0–10.0 | 9.0+ | 90%+ | First Class with Distinction | | 8.0–8.99 | 8.0–8.99 | 80–89% | First Class | | 7.0–7.99 | 7.0–7.99 | 70–79% | First Class | | 6.0–6.99 | 6.0–6.99 | 60–69% | Second Class | | 5.0–5.99 | 5.0–5.99 | 50–59% | Pass | | Below 5.0 | Below 5.0 | Below 50% | Fail |
