German Grading System: How It Works

German Grading System: How It Works

Germany uses a grading scale that runs backwards compared to most systems — a 1 is the best grade and a 6 is the worst. If you're applying to a German university, converting your grades to the Bavarian formula, or trying to understand what "1,7" means on a transcript, this guide covers everything.

The German Grade Scale

German universities grade on a 1 to 6 scale, with decimal precision:

| Grade | Label | Meaning | |:---:|:---|:---| | 1.0–1.3 | Sehr gut | Very good / Excellent | | 1.7–2.3 | Gut | Good | | 2.7–3.3 | Befriedigend | Satisfactory | | 3.7–4.0 | Ausreichend | Sufficient / Passing | | 5.0 | Nicht ausreichend | Fail | | 6.0 | Nicht ausreichend | Fail (worst) |

1.0 Best2.0 Good3.0 Satisfactory4.0 Pass5.0–6.0 Fail

Key points:

  • 4.0 is the minimum passing grade — anything below is a fail
  • There is no grade between 4.0 and 5.0 — it jumps from passing to failing
  • Grades use one decimal place (1.3, 2.7, etc.)
  • The best possible grade is 1.0 (practically never awarded for entire degrees)

How German Grades Are Calculated

German universities use a credit-weighted average similar to GPA, but on the 1–6 scale:

German Grade Average

Average = Σ (Grade × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

Example

| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade × Credits | |:---|:---:|:---:|:---:| | Mathematics I | 8 | 1.7 | 13.6 | | Physics | 6 | 2.3 | 13.8 | | German Lit | 4 | 1.3 | 5.2 | | Lab Work | 4 | 2.0 | 8.0 |

  • Total (Grade × Credits): 13.6 + 13.8 + 5.2 + 8.0 = 40.6
  • Total credits: 8 + 6 + 4 + 4 = 22
  • Average grade: 40.6 ÷ 22 = 1.85 (Gut / Good)

Converting to the German System: The Bavarian Formula

If you have grades from another system and need to convert them to the German scale, universities typically use the Bavarian Formula (Modified Bavarian Formula):

Bavarian Formula

German Grade = (Max − Your Score) ÷ (Max − Min) × 3 + 1

Where:

  • Max = maximum possible score in your system
  • Min = minimum passing score in your system
  • Your Score = your actual score

Example: Indian Percentage to German Grade

Indian system: Max = 100, Min (passing) = 40, Your score = 78%

| Step | Calculation | Result | |:---|:---|:---:| | 1. Max − Your Score | 100 − 78 | 22 | | 2. Max − Min | 100 − 40 | 60 | | 3. Divide and multiply | (22 ÷ 60) × 3 | 1.10 | | 4. Add 1 | 1.10 + 1 | 2.10 |

An Indian 78% converts to a German 2.10 (Gut / Good).

Quick Conversion Table: Indian Percentage → German Grade

| Indian % | German Grade | Classification | |:---:|:---:|:---| | 90%+ | 1.3–1.5 | Sehr gut | | 80–89% | 1.7–2.0 | Gut | | 70–79% | 2.3–2.7 | Gut / Befriedigend | | 60–69% | 3.0–3.3 | Befriedigend | | 50–59% | 3.7–4.0 | Ausreichend | | Below 50% | 5.0 | Fail |

These are approximate. The Bavarian formula gives exact results, but some universities apply their own conversion tables.

German Grades → ECTS

German universities also map their grades to the ECTS grading scale for European mobility:

| German Grade | ECTS Grade | Percentile | |:---:|:---:|:---:| | 1.0–1.3 | A | Top 10% | | 1.7–2.0 | B | Next 25% | | 2.3–2.7 | C | Next 30% | | 3.0–3.3 | D | Next 25% | | 3.7–4.0 | E | Bottom 10% | | 5.0+ | F | Fail |

German Grades → US GPA

Converting German grades to the US 4.0 GPA scale is approximate. Here's the most common mapping:

| German Grade | US Letter | US GPA | |:---:|:---:|:---:| | 1.0 | A+ | 4.0 | | 1.3 | A | 4.0 | | 1.7 | A- | 3.7 | | 2.0 | B+ | 3.3 | | 2.3 | B | 3.0 | | 2.7 | B- | 2.7 | | 3.0 | C+ | 2.3 | | 3.3 | C | 2.0 | | 3.7 | C- | 1.7 | | 4.0 | D | 1.0 | | 5.0 | F | 0.0 |

For US GPA details, see our US Grading System Guide.

What Is a "Good" Grade in Germany?

| Grade Range | What It Means | Career Impact | |:---:|:---|:---| | 1.0–1.7 | Excellent — rare for entire degrees | Opens doors to competitive PhD programs and top employers | | 1.8–2.5 | Very good — strong performance | Competitive for most positions and graduate programs | | 2.6–3.0 | Good — solid performance | Meets requirements for most jobs and further study | | 3.1–4.0 | Satisfactory to sufficient | May limit some opportunities but still a complete degree | | 5.0+ | Fail | No degree awarded |

Unlike the US system where grade inflation is common, German grades are strictly distributed. A 1.0 is genuinely exceptional, and most students graduate between 2.0 and 3.5.
